In Romania, wine production is divided by geographical areas which vary both in relief and as regards the climate. The areas are well delimited and fall under several categories: the first is the wine-growing region, a wide-ranging area from which wines with common characteristics can be obtained. The name of the areas generally match the geographic region; the second category is the vineyard, a winemaking unit associated with the idea of old tradition in the culture of vines; the third category, the winemaking center, encompasses a smaller area, with a climate-soil unit; the fourth is the winemaking field, the smallest wine growing unit and an integral part of a winemaking center. Romania is divided into seven wine-growing regions.
